Andrew Smith is active in Boston’s musical community as a composer, guitarist and educator.  His music has been performed throughout the United States in venues such as Boston University’s Tsai Performance Center, Southern Illinois University’s Outside the Box new music festival, the Aspen Composer’s Conference, the University of Central Missouri’s New Music Festival and the Rivers School Conservatory’s Seminar on Contemporary Music for the Young.  Smith has worked closely with groups such as the Redline Brass Quintet, ALEA III, the SIUC Percussion Ensemble, the Xanthos Ensemble, Ensemble 451 among many others and has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the International Music Prize for Excellence in Music Composition from the National Academy of Music, the Carl Deis Prize for Excellence in Music Composition and an honors award from the music faculty at Boston University.  Smith earned his D.M.A from Boston University and his M.M. and B.M. from Southern Illinois University.  He has studied with Samuel Headrick, Martin Amlin, Theodore Antoniou, Richard Cornell, David Kopp, Joshua Fineberg, Frank Stemper, Kathleen Ginther, Eric Mandat, Joesph Breznikar and Sharon Isbin.  Smith is currently on the faculty of Boston University’s School of Music, Keene State College and the Yamaha Music School in Lexington Massachusetts.  In addition, he serves as the Director of Networking and Professional Development for the Boston New Music Initiative and composes regularly for the Boston Composers’ Coalition.
